The AMP 2-Minute Pre-Ride E-Bike Safety Checklist

Most of the e-bikes and scooters we fix had a warning sign before they broke. This is the same quick check our techs run. Do it before every ride. Works for any brand: e-bikes, e-scooters and e-motos.

Before every ride: the 2-minute check

  1. Battery. Locked in, charged, and clean. No swelling, cracks, heat or burning smell.
  2. Brakes. Squeeze both. Levers feel firm and the bike won’t roll. No grinding or squealing.
  3. Tires. Pressure matches the number on the tire wall. No cuts, bulges or bald spots.
  4. Bolts. Handlebar, stem, seat and axle nuts are tight. Grab the bars and shake: no wobble. Folding latches locked.
  5. Wheels and chain. Spin each wheel. It runs straight with no rubbing. Chain is clean and not dry.
  6. Lights and bell. White light up front, red in the back, and a bell or horn that works.
  7. Throttle and display. Throttle snaps back on its own. No error codes. Speed set right for the rider.
  8. Helmet and gear. Helmet buckled snug (two fingers under the strap). Closed-toe shoes. Bright clothes.

After the ride: charge it right

  1. Use the charger that came with it, or one AMP has approved for that battery.
  2. Charge on a hard floor, away from doors, beds and anything that burns. Never block your way out.
  3. Don’t charge overnight or while no one is home. Unplug when it’s full.

Red flags: stop riding and get it checked

Battery that is hot, swollen, leaking or smells. Soft or grabby brakes. Grinding or clicking from the motor. Error codes. Wobbly wheel or loose handlebar. A crash, even a small one. If a battery is smoking, get everyone out and call 911.

Questions riders ask

What should I check before riding an e-bike?

Check the battery, brakes, tires, bolts, wheels, lights, throttle and your helmet. It takes about 2 minutes, and it catches most problems before they cause a crash or a breakdown.

How do I know if my e-bike battery is unsafe?

Stop using it if it is swollen, cracked, leaking, hot to the touch or smells like burning. Don’t charge it. Move it outside away from anything that burns and have a shop check it.

How often should an e-bike get a tune-up?

About every 6 months or 500 miles, and right after any crash. Brakes and tires wear faster on e-bikes because they are heavier and faster than regular bikes.
